To begin with, what does it mean to have pride? The Cambridge Dictionary states that it is, “a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction that you get because you or people connected with you have done something good”. What makes me Lawton Proud?
I am Lawton Proud because I went to the best high school, Lawton High. I’m reminded of why with every fellow alumni that I meet, whether I’m greeted with an ‘L up’ or when I shout in the stands “Hanta Yo!” I am also reminded each time by an opposing school why we’re the best when we compare stats— dozens of City wins and counting!
I am Lawton Proud because I went to the best college for my undergraduate, Cameron University. The incredible staff of professionals and dedicated professors saw potential to groom and nurture me every step of the way during my undergraduate years. I will forever be grateful.\
I am Lawton Proud because I work with the best Chamber of Commerce – the Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce. I am reminded each time a fellow resident congratulates us on becoming 5-star accredited, ranking amongst the top in the country. I’m also reminded each time a visitor stops by the office to share how they look forward to receiving their Monday Minute or how they actively help promote Chamber events and new activities available in the community.
I am also Fort Sill Proud because I grew up on the best army post, Fort Sill. Waking up to the bugle horns at 5 a.m. to view the incredibly breathtaking skyline of Oklahoma, the tips of the Wichita Mountains and old artillery displays was and is a constant reminder of how blessed I was to grow up there.
Visiting old historical facilities such as the Post Guardhouse, the Old Chapel and hearing stories of how Fort Sill was built and what buildings continue to be used today was fascinating. In fact, the house I grew up in, was built in the late 1800s— talk about immersing in quality history!
What do all of these schools and organizations have in common? They are all a part of the Lawton Fort Sill community. Being Lawton Proud for me is about remembering how each and every individual in the community has made a significant impact on my personal and professional growth. What is unique and special about the Lawton Fort Sill community is that each resident has the capacity to make the same impact and investment in one another to help drive our city forward. I am proud to live in a community where residents are eager to greet you, no matter who you are or where you’re from, and have the genuine desire to get to know you. That is something to be proud of — I encourage each person to find a unique charm of Lawton Fort Sill, celebrate and share it with everyone you meet!
