SUMMARY:‘Tour De Quartz’ Art Show Will Be Held At Leslie Powell Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Hughes\, Leslie Powell Foundation and Gallery executive director\, hangs Ashleigh Morris’ selfportrait in the gallery for the Oklahoma Arts Institute’s Student Art Show\, “Tour de Quartz.” The opening reception will be Saturday.\nSun\, 11/08/2015 – 2:57am Staff\n\n\n\n\nThe Leslie Powell Foundation and Gallery will have an opening reception for the Oklahoma Arts Institute’s Student Art Show\, “Tour de Quartz\,” from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the gallery\, 620 SW D. \nThe reception will begin after a lecture from Joe Tilton about downtown revitalization. The events are free and open to the public\, and light refreshments will be served. \nEarlier this year the Leslie Powell Foundation and Gallery gave the Oklahoma Arts Institute a grant for its Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain. Two-hundred and seventy students from across the state attended the camp\, which focused on nine disciplines: acting\, ballet\, chorus\, creative writing\, drawing/painting\, film/video\, modern dance\, orchestra and photography. “Tour de Quartz” showcases the students’ work from the drawing/painting and photography disciplines. \nFour students from Lawton attended the camp. A self-portrait of Ashleigh Morris from Eisenhower High School will be among 19 other self-portraits and 18 photographs in the “Tour de Quartz” show. \n“Anybody who looks at (the self-portraits) is going to be able to see the differences in each student’s technique\, style and their approach to the subject; that’s really interesting from the painting aspect\,” said Matthew Hughes\, Leslie Powell Foundation and Gallery executive director. “Then you have photography. These photographs I’ve seen from these kids are wonderful and this is the future of art for our state.” \nHughes said the Leslie Powell Foundation and Gallery has hosted the show before and believes it is a great opportunity to partner with the Oklahoma Arts Institute and show what the students are capable of doing. \nAnne Peters\, Oklahoma Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain director of public relations\, hopes the show at Leslie Powell will inform students in the Lawton area about the Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain opportunity.
